C&NW's Wedge plow X262467 by Philip Weibler
Snow Scenes and Plow Portraits on the C&NW
It was a Storm to end All Storms North Western Newsliner
Photo Section: Highland park, Illinois conducted by Chris Keating
Highland park, Illinois, Part 2: Ravinia by Joe Piersen
Highland park, Illinois, Part 2: Braeside by Joe Piersen
With winter fast approaching, the continuation of Joe Follmar’s snow plow coverage finds its way onto the pages of this issue. As you’ll quickly see, C&NW’s snow fighting equipment included a wide variety. With winters generally starting to get colder again, perhaps we’ll see more snow fighting compared to the last couple of decades.
The second main feature is a continuation of Joe Piersen’s look at Highland Park and nearby towns. This issue focuses on Ravinia and Braeside, leaving Blodgett for a future issue, which will wrap up that series
If you haven’t picked up your copy of the new book, Depots on the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway, by Dennis Holmes, please do so as soon as possible. Since this was a very limited press run, this book is likely to sell out just like the CGW depot book did, so don’t wait too long. The C&NWHS will be represented at Trainfest in Milwaukee in November, and we’re expecting to sell a large number there. If you’re planning to attend Trainfest, be sure to stop by the C&NWHS booth and visit your C&NWHS volunteers — I’ll be in attendance and will welcome your comments, ideas, and suggestions.
We’re in the fall regional meet schedule now, so be sure to attend one of these fine events near you. They are a great place to meet fellow C&NW, M&StL, and CGW fans with less investment than our full-scale annual convention. The regional meets are easy to get to and a lot of fun, with interesting events and good food and entertainment.
On the editorial front, we’re always on the lookout for additional articles, short recollections, or photo-features. You don’t have to be an English professor to write up your memories or put together an article on something you know something about. Trust us to help on the grammar and punctuation front. Probably the largest need is short one to four page articles, as these add variety and help me fill in short sections of the magazine. My contact information is in the masthead on the facing page.
