Quotes:

*(Introduction)“This then is an account of the battle of the new people with the old railroad institutions and how a new and hungry, competitive railroad was born and flourished for a time.?

*(1956) “At 12:03 a.m. eastbound train # 252 derailed into the side of # 384, also eastbound, in the triple track territory about 1 mile west of the Wheaton depot. ?..When the noise and dust subsided, there were 56 wrecked freight cars heaped up six deep on all three main lines?..taking with it the Bell Telephone cables.??.The commuter stations were packed with disgruntled customers.??

Bill carefully hung up his coat and fell dead on the living room carpet. “

*(1958)“He could charm his way through society and the business community with ease??.A sharp dresser, he learned that appearing to listen and exhibiting a willingness to be of help enabled him to swim in any environment.????.I found him to be not unlike the Nebraska’s Platte River – a mile wide and an inch deep.

*(1960)“Following his promotion to industrial agent, he never lost his clerk’s attitudes or mannerisms – always a follower, never a leader. ?..he was always present when called on for service – just like a little shadow. And that was the nickname he acquired:Shadow.

*(1960)“At 10:30 a.m. the Rock Island men came to our meeting. We had seen them on the train the day before, but their aloofness projecting hostility had not invited conversation. ??.In today’s meeting their bile boiled over.

*(1971)“These (accidents) were typical of the ragged operations were experiencing in 1971.

Chrysler was treated with great care by the C&NW’s operating department. There were instances of special (one car) trains being operated to rush so-called ‘shut down’ cars from Chicago connections to Belvidere.?

*(1971)(Because of heavy grain exports) “?The traffic surge overwhelmed the CGW line (to Kansas City)?..an unsignaled line marked by numerous and abrupt changes of grade through hilly country. ???..One solution was thought to be a new hump yard east of Marshalltown.?

*(1971)“The frightful fact soon emerged that no one, not even our power desk, knew where the diesels were at any given moment.?

*(1971)(Thinking he was firing an SP employee, SP’s president) ..Brosnan reached into his wallet, pulled out $200, and handed it to the man with the admonition that he never wanted to see him on the property again. ??..The young man took the money, went down the stairs, climbed into his Coca Cola truck and drove off.?

*(1973)“I spotted the first homemade diesel # 504 manufactured by Milt Crandall from an old U.P. E9B unit. Milt was full of ideas on how to do more with less. ??The newly designed cab was smaller than one on a regular E9; a standing person?had to stoop to see forward.?

*(1978)(Jealous of our FRA loan) “?. The Rock Island claimed that they had a superior route for moving coal trains. ? So, unannounced and wearing hard hats, we inspected their yards??.the condition of the Rock Island’s facilities?the badly maintained track, shabby structures and equipment ?Jim Zito requested the Rock Island to allow us to make a hi-rail inspection over their line.(The request was denied.)

*(1978)“Our request for conversion software?.was automatically dumped to the end of the line????.Systems was like some sort of black hole where requests vanished and died??.?
