Change is inevitable. Change took steam from the rails and replaced it with switchers and streamlined diesels, the latter of which in turn fell to road-switchers and later second-generation diesels. Then came widecabs, and all our old favorite lines were slowly merged into oblivion. Railroads became less friendly to the casual fan, and the cab rides of my youth were replaced with more frequent demands to get off the property.
Though most view the many changes we’ve witnessed on the railroads as negative, occasionally there is change for the better. This issue represents another step in the evolution of North Western Lines, and our mission to bring you the very best of the North Western and its affiliated roads. It is the first issue that is all-color. As color printing has slowly become more competitive, and White River Productions’ printing quantities have increased, we achieved the bargaining power to go all-color with all our historical society magazines. This, along with several other factors, has allowed us to move the printing back stateside, an important consideration as America struggles to compete on a global scale. Along with the change to all-color is the end of the white cover wrap, and NWL will continue to mail in polybags. While the magazine itself is “all-color,” that doesn’t mean that we will no longer be running black & white photography. We will still be running black & white, but we will have color available anywhere we need it, and we can now tint any black & white image much as we did the cover of the “People” issue (30:4).
Another item of interest is the four photos running in the Question Man column in this issue. Both Rich and I would like to see the Question Man column evolve into a place where photographs are submitted as part of answers or comments on specific areas of interest. Larry Mack’s photos in this issue were simply submitted by him in response to an earlier question, but represent a valuable venue for information exchange. If you see something in the Question Man column and have something photographically interesting that’s related, by all means jot down a few lines about each photograph and send it in. The photos should come to me, and an email or carbon copy should go to Rich so he can manage it and get your comments into his column. We both look forward to what you contribute.
In this issue we take a look at the location of our next annual meet—Rochelle, Ill. The C&NWHS puts on one of the best conventions of any historical society, and it’s a great place to exchange information, learn more about your line of interest, and make lifelong friends in the hobby. Make your plans now to attend.
Also in this issue are two small features on the Flambeau “400.” The first arrived the week the “400” issue went to press, and so falls (at least somewhat) into the category of an addendum. The second includes coverage of an interesting cab ride on the Flambeau.
This is Paul August’s last installment as the writer behind the Photo Section: thanks, Paul, for your hard work in bringing the Photo Section to life. Our new Photo Section editor, Chris Keating, will take over in the next issue.
Thanks is also due Lee Anderson for his long reign in handling dealer sales—he’s been at it for 10 years. Thanks, Lee, for your hard work. An interesting coincidence is the use of his CGW steam material for this issue’s Photo Section, which I chose long before I knew he was stepping down. Perhaps he’ll have more time and we’ll see more of his efforts between the covers of NWL.
Finally, please take note of the back issues that are now available on CD. The list is printed on the bottom of page 63.
Change? Yes. I hope you approve, and I’ll close as Ray Jorgensen often closes his letters:
“…yours for a better North Western History,”
