A rally cry for Kenosha rings with this presentation of North Western Lines as we draw closer to the 2010 Chicago & North Western Annual Meet.
Chris Keating’s story on how AMC used the rails leads off the issue followed by Ron Plazzotta’s recollections of working as an agent and operator in the area. We also rounded up a few different photos to paint a picture of the variety of rail activity that was once the typical scene around Kenosha. In addition, the KD Line has been gone for many, many years, and it’s a wonder that one can find any remains among the overgrowth. Erik Bryant took some time to forward a few scenes from his exploration.
Shifting gears to the Chicago Great Western, Wallace Thompson penned his memories of growing up in Five Points, Illinois, to CGW agent Charles Finch, who worked in Sycamore (the more familiar location just east of Five Points). Thompson remembers the excellent service provided by the railroad back in the early to mid-1900s, and a glimpse of the CGW traffic in that timeframe is presented in this issue of NWL.
Finally, as promised, Joe Piersen wraps up his series on Highland Park as part 3 focuses on Blodgett. The piece is full of photos — mostly the high-horsepower C&NW units, but there are also scenes of diesels painted in CGW red and bit of North Shore under the wires.
Now, on to a personal thought concerning the Chicago & North Western. As mentioned in my previous column, my experience of C&NW is “off-line,” and in case you were unable to read between the lines, there are still a few of us who cheer rather loudly when something other than the “home road” shows up (even if it isn’t on the point). We just happen to like variety.
The supporting argument for “C&NW fandom” away from home was boldly underscored last month when Railfan & Railroad magazine published a shot of UP’s C&NW Heritage SD70ACe 1995 in — you’ve gotta love this — Buffalo, New York! If you missed it, it was on the point of a westbound Railex reefer train that was photographed last January.
I’m sure the photographer was just as shocked as readers, wondering how the big railroad managed to cut loose with one of its “sacred” Heritage units off line. (I’ve been hoping 1995 would show up here at home, but no luck in two-plus years. Maybe I should have moved to Buffalo!)
Coupling this memorable news photo with my own experience, I wondered, “Where else in North America has C&NW’s influence wandered?” (That is, other than a typical “run-through” location like North Platte!)
In mulling over a future project, I’m setting up a photo file for C&NW sightings (and predecessor roads) away from home. Please consider contributing good action shots (preferred on the point), and the earlier the era, the better. (As usual, good slides, high-quality prints, or high-resolution scans sent on a disk work best. Good caption information is necessary.)
In advance, thanks for sharing a slice of your C&NW enthusiasm with me.
Back on home territory, the C&NWHS 2011 calendar is just about ready. It’s loaded with terrific shots and all the important dates for C&NWHS members.
On the modeling front, the Newsliner insert has information on a new two-bay covered hopper used for hauling cement. It will be produced by InterMountain Railway. One advantage to modeling the C&NW (regardless of scale) is the abundance of motive power and rolling stock available. I’m sure there will be many more great releases ahead.
Enjoy the issue as well as your time with family and fellow members in Kenosha!
