Editor's Notes:
Editor's Desk:

The convention in Rochelle proved to be a fine event—typical of conventions in recent years. This issue covers some of the activities that attendees were able to partake of, and includes detailed coverage of the photo and model contests, both of which had some really great entries. If you missed the convention, you missed a great time—start planning now to attend the meet in Huron, S. Dak., next year!
This issue is a little heavier in model coverage than most, and I’m interested in opinions on what kind of coverage and how much modeling we should include in NWL. Statistics tell us that typically about 80 percent of our members are active modelers, and the inclusion of prototype information with the modeling articles is a help to our modeling members. Take a look at Mark Carlson’s article in this issue and let me know your thoughts.
The “Where They Were” series is winding down. With only two “pure” C&NW engines left, there will soon be the extinction of in-use C&NW power. As I write this, the pair are working the Belvidere auto trains, unfortunately a night operation. A related item, the UP heritage unit to be painted in a C&NW-inspired livery is at the paint shop, so we’ll likely see that in the next issue. As the visible remains of the great North Western begin to disappear, capturing the remaining details will prove paramount. Although the locomotives are all but gone, there remains a number of other things to document, including freight cars, buildings, and other lineside details.
In this issue we also have some detailed coverage of the CGW’s Thursday night meat train from Council Bluffs to Chicago, put together by C&NWHS secretary and former CGW veteran Dick Wilson. One of the amazing things about the C&NWHS is the consistency of your board in society-related activities. Most of the columns, reviews, and many articles appear in NWL as a result of these few individuals, who seem tireless in regard to society activities. The next time you see one of these individuals, don’t forget to thank them for all their effort.
There are several exciting articles coming up in NWL. The next issue will focus on people of the North Western, with a number of first-person accounts of railroading. This is a follow-up to the well-received people issue from the spring of 2003 (who could forget the World War II-era photo of the two kids admiring C&NW steam). This will include a photo section with an array of World War II-era photos in color, a rarity. If you have anything to contribute, including railroading stories, be sure to drop me an email and let me know what you’re sending or what you can contribute.
The first issue of next year will include coverage of the Huron area. I’ve never been to Huron or witnessed the DM&E in action on the western end of its lines, so I’m very much looking forward to the convention. If you’ve never attended a convention, consider this a personal invitation to come out and enjoy a fantastic weekend with your comrades from the C&NWHS. Huron should be relatively inexpensive and an easy place to navigate, away from the hustle and bustle of some of the larger cities where meets occur.
As the DM&E is poised on the brink of entering the Powder River Basin, the next two or three years should prove interesting. Echoing what happened with the C&NW two decades ago, the DM&E is battling regulatory agencies, environmental concerns, and other railroads to get into the coal business, and we all know how successful that was for the C&NW. I hope to be trackside when the line is finished and the first train moves coal, and the meet in Huron will give a little better understanding of how the DM&E operates on its former North Western trackage. In the meantime, we’ll continue to fan the North Western via the pages of North Western Lines.
