Editor's Notes:
In this issue
As magazine editor, and as your North Western Lines production editor, I receive a lot of mail. Some come through e-mail while others are delivered to our post office box. A lot of the letters are handwritten! (Wow, there’s a lost form of communication!)
There’s just something about receiving an old-fashioned letter, and I’ve noticed that the vast majority of these have at least one thing in common: the writer shares a short story.
Everybody has a story to tell, and rail enthusiasts have been known to talk the ears off their friends at shows and on railfan outings. It finally dawned on me that perhaps these short stories have their place in society magazines. We’ve always encouraged members to submit well-written articles with good supporting images, but it often involves an incredible amount of time and research. Most fans are capable, however, of penning their memories in fairly short order and sharing a related photo or two from their albums.
Perhaps you’d like to share a fond memory from your C&NW world. Maybe you had a terrific day railfanning and saw something unusual, or maybe you had an interesting experience working for the railroad.
The thought of beginning a new standing feature that encourages participation has been on my mind for quite some time, and I’m reminded of this whenever I receive a letter. I appreciate your kind comments and your encouragement, and I really appreciate your taking time to share your memory or experience.
Along with your story, please include a couple of good photos. (We kindly ask not to send us “paper images” as we have no publication use for these.) Ideal images are often run two columns wide, so we’ll likely devote a half-page (perhaps a little more) to this section.
While I haven’t decided on a title for the standing feature, please identify your submissions as “Short Stories” so that they can be filed correctly. In submitting, we encourage you to send them to our post office address shown on page 2. We do not discourage using email, but the traffic is “high volume,” and we often receive images that are not useable for publication. (They must be high-resolution).
Once we have a good collection of these, we will introduce the feature. Again, please be mindful of length — two pages of double-spaced, typewritten text would be the maximum, and please supply a good image (we will scan and return the image).
Now, let me briefly touch on two other topics. First, we had a great time in Peoria, and it was nice to see all of you who attended. We have a few picture highlights of the meet in this issue as well as a quick rundown of the model and photo winners.
Also, I would really like to encourage all of you to participate in the model and photo displays. I call them displays because it’s really more than a contest. Personally I enjoy looking at a photo or two from your collection because they often inspire me in my own modeling pursuits. Again, we know you have something to share, so take a moment to locate a nice image, make a print, and show it off at the next meet in Norfolk, Nebraska.
We hope you enjoy this summer issue, and we’ll catch up with you next quarter.
