My first job out of college lasted two years. The next one lasted five. That was followed by a seven-year stint at an engineering firm. I’ve been publishing for 14. Mike Blaszak has been faithfully presenting us with current news in North Western Lines for a staggering 30 years! To put this in perspective, he has worked with every editor of North Western Lines, worked through every president of the C&NWHS, and watched the C&NW go from struggling Midwest granger to coal-hauling superpower to fallen flag. He’s reported spin-offs, abandonments, and covered regionals and shortlines operating on former C&NW track. What an achievement.
This issue, the second “People of the North Western” issue, is a tribute to the people of the C&NW, and hitting a milestone such as Mike’s fits right in with the celebration. Those of us living in the editing and publishing world owe much of our success to the many support people that help us with the things we publish. Seldom is such a milestone achieved. His run at compiling and editing the news is longer than the first iteration of Passenger Train Journal, longer than Dale Sander’s run at CTC Board, out lasts the Pacific Rail News run, and is only just shy of the all-time existence of Jim Boyd’s onetime upstart Railfan & Railroad, the first magazine to substantially compete with Kalmbach’s long-running Trains. We’ll take some space on page nine to reminisce with Mike.
The Photo Section in this issue is one that has been in the planning stage ever since the images in the Library of Congress were made available on the Web. These exceptional images give us a look into that time period in color, and war-era Kodachrome makes one think of the proverbial hen’s teeth. In 20 years of collecting images, there’s only a few here in that era in color, and most have significantly faded. One problem in the Photo Section was the dilemma of which images to run smaller—most begged for full-page treatment.
Lloyd Hannah’s A Brakeman on the Southern Illinois has been in the file for many years, waiting for an opportunity such as this. When sorting photographs for that article, a group of images was discovered that were submitted some time ago by Gene Lewis. These were of the construction of a spur on the same section of track covered by Lloyd, and text to go with them was found in the recently printed 12,000 Days book, which I’ve only had time to look at briefly. A review will appear sometime soon, but in the meantime suffice it to say it is one of the most well-written narratives on a career I’ve seen, and the condensed version of the events at Pioneer should whet your appetite for more.
The next issue will take a look at Huron, S.D., and if you haven’t made plans to attend the C&NWHS Annual Meet there next year, mark your calendars for May 18, 19, and 20, and plan on joining us for what will undoubtedly prove to be an outstanding meet. The Annual Meet is one of the key events of the C&NWHS, where attendees meet the key people in the society, enjoy tours, clinics, and get a chance to share and learn more about the C&NW, CGW, M&StL, and the other fallen flags represented by the C&NWHS. There are also regional meets for Chicagoland, Iowa, and Wisconsin, and those are great get-togethers that are generally inexpensive and enjoyable. Get a little more involved—you might find you like many of the “People of the North Western.”
