Editor's Notes:

From the Editor's Desk

In a recent note from Jerry Krug wondering about colors, he wrote: “I am wondering if the C&NWHS could prepare a flyer that shows the various versions of yellow used on C&NW engines. While I think I know Traditional yellow vs. Safety yellow, it would be nice to have a definitive reference piece. Seems like it would be hard to do, since color is dependent on the eyes of the beholder as well as the skill of the printer. Actually, I don’t even know how many versions of yellow were used, but it would be nice to have a high-quality piece on slick paper that showed the various versions.”

My response might be of interest here, because it not only applies to models, but also to the printed page. There were several versions of yellow, and the best reference material for that is perhaps Joe Piersen’s discussion of colors in the Run of the GEs. How the yellow appeared depended on a myriad of factors, including what kind of cloud cover there was, the angle of light, what else was around, reflections, etc.  I personally believe there is no single “right” color for a model, and perhaps not for the printed page, either.

We look at our models in indoor conditions with all different kinds of light, and that drastically effects the appearance. To match our models to actual paint chips I believe is fundamentally wrong for several reasons.  First, a model is very small, and color is directly affected by the size of the item.  Second, paint fades.  Third, source light is different (i.e. incandescent vs. sunlight).  Fourth, did I mention the light is different?  I’m sure we could reproduce somewhat closely C&NW’s various colors, but then it depends on whether NWL is viewed indoors under incandescent light or outdoors in sunlight. Color proofs here are viewed indoors in incandescent light and “matched” to C&NW yellow.

Go to page 62 of this issue of NWL. Look at the green lettering at the top left that says “Wanted for Future North Western Lines Articles” and compare that to the green in the “Member’s Exchange” lettering just below it. Guess what—they are exactly the same color, same ink, same percentage, same everything, except the background and font type. Now we’re onto something—the background and type size affects the color! That means a GE in the brown Wyoming coal fields in the fall will look different than one against the green trees of central Iowa in the summer.

Taking into account all the above variables, and then adding in the kind of film, the exposure that day, the light that day, the way the film has been stored all these years, the quality of the scanner employed, and finally, the “color correction” process, one can conclude that C&NW yellow is almost any hue in the yellow band of the rainbow. My dad, an optometrist and lifelong C&O modeler, did a clinic a couple years ago on why we shouldn’t match our models to paint chips. I suppose the folks who want an exact match to a paint chip were offended. Me? I’m a believer in complete guesswork—just make it look like C&NW yellow. Looks are more important than formula. Perhaps with page 62 as an example you will believe, too! I may get a letter or two from the paint-matching folks, and I’ll be interested in any logical reasons for paint matching. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the models and model photos contained herein, knowing that they each have a viable version of C&NW’s beautiful yellow and green livery, or a great rendition of a predecessor paint scheme of your choice.
