Editor's Notes:
Coal. No other single commodity has impacted railroading as much as this one single thing. In the early days locomotives burned it, railroads hauled it, and men mined it. Today, it represents the foundation of much of our railroad infrastructure. In today’s world, there is little doubt that railroads like the Kansas City Southern, the Burlington Northern, and the C&NW wouldn’t have excelled in the 1980s without it, and might not have survived at all.

Twenty years ago, in August, 1984, the C&NW hauled its first trainload of coal out of the Powder River Basin. In celebration of that event, which began the process that changed the North Western right before our eyes, this issue is dedicated to Powder River coal. It was Joe Piersen who suggested that we run Keith Feurer’s article on the 20th anniversary of that first run. For me, anything involving coal or iron ore is a bandwagon I’ll always jump on.

I grew up chasing coal trains in the coalfields of Appalachia, most often following the Chesapeake & Ohio’s many turns up every ravine with a black seam. Every small collecting yard was a target, and an enormous amount of coal was pulled out of those mountains just a few carloads at a time. “Flood loading” is the term back east for loading an entire train while it’s moving, and is a modern term—a thing of only the last two or three decades. For the North Western, the Powder River Basin introduced unit coal trains like never before, and the railroad was converted to a coal-hauling machine of epic proportions.

The three main articles herein are three different perspectives on coal. The first is a look at the operation of a single coal train in the Powder River Basin—a typical run on a typical day. This sort of article is amazingly hard to find and is anything but typical, its rarity perhaps an indication of the everyday nature of railroading, and yet it’s the glimpse into operations we are all interested in. The second is one of the most unique articles I’ve seen in any of the sixty-something magazines I’ve produced. To have a record of what happens in the world of land acquisition when a railroad decides on expansion is incredibly valuable—especially coming from someone like Keith Feurer. The third is the point of view most of us have—an outsider documenting history as he sees it unfold.

For me, producing this issue has been bittersweet. As I got more and more involved in the Powder River Basin, I found myself wondering how I could have missed it in person. When BC Rail expanded with a new coal line in 1983, I headed 700 miles north of our border and nearly 3,000 miles from home to shoot it, yet I never went out and shot the C&NW’s new line just one state away. As I studied the C&NW route, there was suddenly this lure, a call to the wilds of Wyoming, and yet it was devoid of promise. Today it’s nearly all UP, and the C40-8s and SD60s with the bar and ball logo are no longer in their own element, pulling coal tonnage up Myles Hill, sitting in neat rows in Bill or South Morrill, or crawling under a silo under a full moon, loading more black diamonds for the machinery of America’s power producers.

Alas, I waited too long. Thanks, however, to Randy, Keith, and many others, I am allowed that passage back in time into the Basin, where C&NW men and machines are still moving coal in the halls of memory.
