Finally, some photos that aren't from IOWA!

TOWER CK                                        ST. PAUL                                        OTHERS

WINONA, MN

The original fleet of CNW's 800 series SD40-2's were gone by the 1990's.  Here, Dan caught #880 in 1989 at Winona, MN.

That same year, CNW 4154 and 6835 sat idle at the engine terminal.

CNW 923 was still wearing the Milwaukee Road-inspired "split-cab" scheme in the late year of 1988.  This train will back out of the Winona Yard onto the Soo Line's Twin Cities-Chicago main.  It has just come off of a DM&E train.

In winter of 1989, CNW 4409 sat idle after switching out the yard.  This GP15-1 worked as the Winona switcher for quite a time.

From the west, CNW 4323 and a "Penn Central" black SD45 could be found in Winona.  April 1989 photo.

In February 1988, CNW 4360 and 4280 sit "elephant style" idle in the yard.

SD45 #6485 head on at the Winona engine terminal.  By 2002 all the structures (and the engine) have been eliminated from the UP system.

Dan writes "you could still smell the fresh paint" on CNW 4157 when it visited Winona in the fall of 1989.

An all-CNW consist of 6864 and 6870 led a train out of Winona on the Soo Line main.

In the summer of 1988, CNW 4119 worked Winona.  Later, it would be sold to the Fox River Valley, and eventually become part of the Wisconsin Central.  It would remain on the WC roster until the CN merger.

In the spring of 1989, GP15-1 4410 was teamed up with CNW 6898 at the yard in Winona.

Near the engine terminal, SD45 #974 idled with a "half-green scheme" GP7.  March, 1989 photo.

Dusk settles on CNW 6872, which, at the time, was leased to the DM&E.  Behind the unit, a DME SD10 and another CNW SD40-2 can be seen.

CNW 4261switches out Winona Yard.

Some of CNW's 'chop-nose' GP7's in the 4300 series, (like 4322) were equipped with steam generators from passenger service.  That was the case on the back of CNW 4323, which still wore the 'split-cab' scheme at Winona in 1989.

SD45 6523 still wore "Penn Central" black in April 1989.

Business car Larry S. Provo sat at Winona's  yard.  It had been  used on a DM&E business train for SD senator Larry Pressler.

A DMIR maroon engine was coupled with CNW 6918 in the winter of 1989.

GP7 4206 idles between assignments in Winona.

So do GP7 4360, 4280, and 6835.  Here they are from the other side.

Just before dark, CNW 6835 gets turned on the wye in the spring of 1989.

Although never used, CNW 10369, a bay window caboose, sat dormant in Winona with a lot of bad-order cars for a long spell.  It is seen in February of 1988.  It was gone by the mid-1990's.

ST. PAUL

At South St. Paul, AC4400 #8831 led a train in February of 2000.

In October of 1992, CNW GP38-2's 4704 and 4710 pull out of St. Paul with a mixed train in tow.

At the belt yard in St. Paul, CNW 6500 could be seen with a distant caboose.  This unit was a unique rebuild project on the CNW.

An all-CNW consist of three units backs out of Winona.  The three consist of CNW 6863, 4195, and SD45 923, still in the classic "split cab" scheme.

The last GP7 to be assigned to Winona was this freshly painted "traditional yellow" GeeP, number 4174.

Chopped-nose CNW 4153 at Winona in 1988

UP has infiltrated the system, and rust is eating away at the nose of CNW 6862 by the late date of June 17, 1995.

In April 1988, GP15-1 4410 idled with CNW 6898

CNW 6865 was light power with CNW 4131 in the early spring of 1990.

BN 3051 makes a guest appearance with CNW 6904.  They are passing by Tower CK and will head east on the Soo Line main to Tunnel City and on to Adams, WI.  They will depart the Soo in Tunnel City and take the CNW line from there.

A couple more views of 4323 at the yard in Winona.

The CNW had quite a collection of scrap cars at Winona, including these three which sat dormant for over a decade.  The UP cut them up in 1996, but the 170581 and 170702 were pictured in the final freight car roster.

6870 and 6871 evidently have the exact same Safety Yellow paint scheme, as evidenced by this view of 6870 leading another SD40-2 out of Winona in the summer of 1992.

TOWER CK

The spring of 1989 brought about the abandonment of Tower CK at Winona.  From this view, the eastbound Soo Line trackage can be seen, as well as the patched street crossing.  Today, this scene is unrecognizable.

Here's a view in the opposite direction of tower CK, its fate about to be decided.  In 1996, a switch was placed near the tower to that UP trains can get in and out of Winona Yard.

CK tower, viewed from the southeast.  The track is still in place, but a red board shows its condition in 1989.

OTHERS

Dan threw in this shot from Las Vegas, Nevada. Dash 9 #8651 was the second unit on an APL stack train in September of 1998.

At Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, this CNW..., er, Wisconsin Central yellow-and-green GP9 could still be found working the yard in 1999.
