CNW'S IN JUNE

Plus a Derailment Extra

In this update, I'll cover some brief stops in Boone, Liberty, MO, and Ames, IA. I also caught the remains of a nasty derailment in Des Moines.

BOONE

CNW 4706 was on the point of the east Iowa wayfreight during a very foggy morning in June. I caught this on my way into Boone where I was training to be an engineer on the BSV.

Later that day, CNW 8831 stopped briefly at Shamrock for a crew change. The sun didn't agree with me for this shot, so I chased it to Ames to get a shot from the other side... only to have the sun disappear behind a cloud the second I took the shot. So even with the poor lighting, this was still the better of two evils. Such is a railroader's luck!

After the bad luck with 8831, I heard horns coming from north of Ames. After getting up to 6th St., I found this lovely MEADM train heading south for Des Moines. The only thing that could have made this shot more beautiful would have been a CNW engine on the point...

Its 4706 again, only this time on the WEST Iowa Wayfreight. Many of you have already seen this on the July photo of the month. This is the spot where many of my favorite CNW shots are taken, and with two GP38's on the front, this also merits as one of my favorites. The second unit is CNW 4705.

TRIP TO KANSAS CITY...

At Liberty along the Spine Line, this I&M Rail Line "SD9-type" engine idled in the yard. There was plenty of IMRL traffic here, but I only saw one UP train the whole time!

CNW 8835 was the highest numbered North Western engine on the roster in 1995. In June 2001, it was the leading unit on a southbound IMRL mixed frieght at the yard in Liberty, MO. At this point on the spine line, the IMRL and UP share the Right of Way.

After all those years, this part of the Rock Island still shows through in Trenton, MO. Obviously the yard was much larger in the RI days than it is now. I assume the building is now privately owned?

DES MOINES DERAILMENT...
OOOPS! A northbound train coming into the yard spilled a little grain on the way in.

Get out your Roundhouse-MDC model hoppers and compare the underbody... I bet you missed a couple things, didn't you? However, you probably keep the trucks on better than the UP does...

For a few days, the derailment fouled the IAIS mainline so that all east or westbounds had to take the Spine Line to Hull Ave Yard, then run around the train, and take the Spine line back to the mainline, bypassing the wreckage between the yard leads.
