In 1976, the C&NW acquired 26 reconditioned 50 foot double plug door insulated boxcars equipped with Dual Air-Pack interior for use by canned goods shippers. These cars were acquired from U.S. Railway Equipment and were assigned by the C&NW to a new canning plant then being constructed in Ft Dodge, IA, as well as the general pool that would allow for the expanding canned goods business in Chicago. All 26 of these cars were reconditioned at the US Railway shops located in Washington IN and were delivered painted with black ends, yellow/gold sides and a silver roof and the “Employee Owned” herald. These ready to run HO models have been produced by Athearn and come with correct 70- ton trucks and McHenry couplers. Available in 3 numbers (600613, 600624, 600627).
